Ofcom Continue To Investigate BSkyB
Communications regulator, Ofcom, is continuing to investigate whether one of the UK’s largest broadcasters is fit continue in its role.
Ofcom has set up a team - Project Apple - to assess whether BSkyB should still hold its broadcasting licence in light of the phone hacking scandal.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron set up an inquiry under Lord Justice Leveson to look into the specific claims about phone hacking at the News of the World as well as allegations of illicit payments to police by the press. But a separate exercise was also put into action to review the general culture and ethics of the British media.
This has provided evidence for Ofcom for its investigation of BSkyB, which will be judged against its rules for being “fit and proper” to hold a UK broadcast license.
This mean that Ofcom could, in theory, revoke BSkyB’s broadcasting license at the end of the investigation despite it being the country’s biggest pay TV operator with over 10 million subscribers.
However Philip Hunter of Broadcast Engineering said: "BSkyB has a virtually unblemished record in terms of content, and is generally considered to be a well-run company at arm’s length from the Murdoch empire. Therefore, it looks like revelations from the Leveson Inquiry will have to imply even greater iniquities than have been revealed so far to seriously threaten BSkyB’s continuation as a broadcaster."
But Ofcom has warned that it has revoked a license in the past.
The investigation continues.
