Women 'Feeling The Pinch' As TV Jobs Cut

According to a recently released census detailing job cuts in the television industry, woman have been the hit the worst.
Compared to the industry average of just 10% fewer workers than three years ago, in areas including terrestrial, cable and satellite television and distribution, the number employed in the sector now stands 20% less than in 2006.
The most recent census, carried out this year by Skillset training, found that there are currently 50,550 people employed in the television sector, a drop of 5,300 on 2006.
Furthermore, the number of female employees has dropped considerably. While there are only 300 fewer men in the sector than three years ago, there are now 5,000 fewer women.
Kate O'Connor, Skillset Executive Director commented: "It is a real worry. A drop like this in a short period suggests a talent drain.
"But we can't say what are the reasons, though the drop is so dramatic, we haven’t carried out that work yet. I honestly can't comment on who is leaving, their ages, or why, because the census doesn't show that."
She concluded: "We intend to investigate and produce a larger report on February 1st, which will also cover issues such as equality."
