QTV Improves Its Sports Broadcasting Capabilities

QTV in partnership with ES Broadcast and Ross Video, has enhanced its sports broadcasting capabilities to better serve its clients, including the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), BBC, EBU, World Archery, and The New York Times.

As Scotland's largest outside broadcast facilities provider, QTV produced over 500 events and outside broadcasts across all sectors in 2022. It is the production partner of the SPFL, delivering coverage of 180 Cinch Premiership matches a season and managing the league’s post-production, world feeds and streaming distribution. In October 2022, QTV facilitated the introduction of, and now hosts, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) operations centre for the Scottish FA.

Facing a challenge to implement an efficient video routing and switching solution, QTV adopted technology from Ross Video, facilitated by ES Broadcast, its principal technology partner. ES Broadcast identified a range of Ross products that would form the standard technology for QTV to build upon. Ross’ end-to-end solutions - with products including Ultrix routers, Carbonite switchers and openGear infrastructure - have become integral components in QTV’s technical strategy.

Key milestones in this partnership include:
• In 2017, QTV initiated services for the SPFL with new broadcasting equipment.
• Adoption of a remote production model by 2020, securing a multi-year contract with the SPFL.
• Launch of custom remote engineering vehicles (ENG) for efficient broadcasting.
• In 2022, QTV relocated to Clydesdale House, a facility purpose-built for remote production, increasing its production capacity.
• By 2023, QTV further expanded its facilities to meet growing demands.

QTV's successful collaboration with Ross Video and ES Broadcast has led to a range of improvements in its business metrics and operations. The company experienced a significant increase in its turnover, rising from £1.7 million in 2018 to £5.3 million in 2023. Alongside this financial growth, QTV has also expanded its workforce, growing from a team of nine to forty-five employees. With the support of Ross Video's innovative technology, QTV has created a leading position for itself in Scottish sports broadcasting, enhanced by the operational support and the specialist experience provided by ES Broadcast, a Ross Video Diamond Elite Partner.

"Our partnership with Ross Video and ES Broadcast has been a game-changer for us at QTV. Their cutting-edge solutions have not only allowed us to produce top-quality content but have been instrumental in our expansion and success in the sports broadcasting sector. Their exceptional support and innovation are invaluable to our operations, and we look forward to many more years of successful cooperation," said Gareth Gordon, Chief Technology Officer at QTV.

"The last six years working with QTV on their projects have been a great example of the infrastructure product portfolio, support and flexibility that we have come to expect from Ross Video. The Ultrix and Carbonite products continue to evolve, something I’m proud to say the ES Broadcast engineering team have been able to help steer with ongoing feedback, and Ross provides us with an excellent platform to build projects from, whether it’s for OB, studio, facility or flypack," said Jonathan Lyth – Group CTO at ES Broadcast.
